Abstract This article reviews the policies that were carried out in our country in the field of adult education, from illiteracy to the concept of permanent instruction. The causes and consequences of the different initiatives, both social and political, set up by the different governments, are shown in this article. Starting from the Republican standing, we can see the evolution of adult education throughout the 20th century, and more specifically during Franco’ dictatorship until the General Education Law came into force in 1970.Key words: illiteracy, adult education, adult lifelong education.
