Schools at War in 1970s Barcelona: Pedagogical Renewal from a Class Perspective Authors Albert Torrent i Font Universitat de Girona Jordi Feu Gelis Universitat de Girona Keywords: Libertarian pedagogy, pedagogical renewal, education and anarchism, schools in struggle, social movements. Abstract Pedagogical renewal is an attempt to reconsider and implement a different schooling culture, since it questions the nature of conventional educational models. From the late 19th century onwards, Catalonia has been home to pedagogical approaches linked to different political and philosophical currents. The variety and manifold nature of these approaches were particularly evident during the two renewal drives of the 20th century: the 1920s and 30s, and the 1960s and 70s. Nonetheless, recollections of these experiences have been selective and have overlooked part of a story filled with nuance and possibility. Recovering approaches that have remained on the margins of canonical history in terms of pedagogical renewal enables in-depth analysis of the role played by certain pedagogical methodologies, demonstrating how they swam against the tide to transform society from the classroom. Keywords: Libertarian pedagogy, pedagogical renewal, education and anarchism, schools in struggle, social movements.
