Abstract The use of photographs as a documentary source in the reconstruction of the History of Education is part of the new trends in contemporary historiography that are taking on ever more relevance. This article will focus on uncovering what images convey about the Madrid Charter Schools during the Franco period from 1950 to 1970, especially at experimental public schools run by different Catholic institutions, those run by city councils, those established by companies, and those created by charitable teaching foundations. According to the 1945 Primary Education Act, all of these schools would be defined as Charter Schools. The main documentary source is the photographic archive of the Memorias de Prácticas collection, held in the Anselmo Romero Marín Archive at the «Manuel Bartolomé Cossío» History of Education Museum at the Complutense University of Madrid.Key words: School photographs, Charter schools, Madrid, Francoism.
