Abstract

This article shows the interest and effort of teachers who taught in schools in the province of Castellón in the early twentieth century to launch the Provincial Pedagogical Museum in the capital. They asked for an institution to help them and complement the lack of training in the teaching schools; they wanted to know new methodologies that promoted active teaching and comprehensive education, where the textbook and memorization were not the only tools; a place to consult from pedagogy treatises to the latest national and foreign magazines and publications; with a copy lending service, both for teachers and the general public; and that it would offer training to teachers, especially in rural areas. The influence of the postulates of the Free Institution of Education is clearly reflected in its demands. The information shown comes from the analysis of the 541 issues of the Magazine La Escuela from 1912 to 1933, deposited in the documentary collection of the municipal archive of Castellón, and the Boletín de Educación number 4 September 1937 published in Castellón, from the private library of Enric Soler i Godes.
