Abstract

The aim of this article is to portray the origins of comparative imagology as a methodological theory deeply marked by the First World War, especially the Alsace-Lorraine conflict. The part played by Fernand Baldensperger as a precursor will be explained, and also the role of the founder, Jean-Marie Carré, leading up to the creation of the Chair of Comparative Literature at the University of Strasbourg, to be occupied by Baldensperger in 1919, and the early work by Carré before he defended his doctoral thesis at this university: an erudite backdrop to the heightened political tension that was to mark the future of Comparative Literature in Europe.
