Abstract

The Golden Legend as a source of medieval Catalan hagiographic drama: a comparative sample In this article we aim to study the influence of the Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine (Jacob of Voragine) on medieval Catalan hagiographic drama, specifically three of the prompt copies of plays in ms 1139 in the BNC: the one about Saint George and the damsel and the dragon, the story of the conversion of Saint Christopher and the one about Saint Matthew. We already have some earlier studies, for example Josep Romeus com-ments in his edition of the hagiographic plays in the manuscript (1957). Therefore, we use his observations as a starting-point for a more detailed analysis of the way in which hagiographic drama adapts some of the lives depicted in Voragines work. To keep within certain limits, we concentrate on the above three pieces as representative of different types of theatrical adaptation of the Golden Legend.
