Abstract

Studies on Catalan Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis (1997-2012) The present article is a general descriptive and partly critical review of the studies on Catalan pragmatics and discourse analysis from 1997 to 2012. Taking each of these areas in turn, we show that, although Catalan linguistics has dealt thoroughly with grammar, phonetics, language history, lexicography, dialectology and sociolinguistics, there is still work to be done in pragmatics and discourse analysis. The studies that have been undertaken, while attracting international interest in some cases, also show some deficiencies, underdeveloped subsidiary areas which have been neglected. We also show that there is an obvious need to apply pragmatics and discourse analysis to an examination of Catalan culture and society, and integrate these studies crossculturally at a universal communicative level. Catalan pragmatics and discourse analysis require an investigation of native peculiarities such that local phenomena and universals are not irreconcilable, but mutually dependent, complementary dimensions.
