Abstract

This article exposes the survey of a field work performed in 2000 in order to evaluate the results of the multilingual education model of the Aran valley. The results are explained for the different degrees of linguistic competence in the three official languages (all of them romance languages, very close one to each other in typological terms: Spanish, Catalan and Occitan) attained by pupils grouped by reason of their linguistic background at home and the linguistic medium of teaching (optionally, one of the three languages mentioned above). It is also considered the degree of linguistic transfer between the three codes in a formal context of use. From the results, it can be concluded that the option taking Occitan as linguistic medium of education is the best of those applied until today in the aranese school system, from the point of view of the linguistic competence reached and the degree of linguistic interference as well, with independence of the students linguistic background.
