Abstract

Following a methodology based on grammaticalization applied to a written corpus, the present study analyses indications that enable us to examine the transition from Middle Portuguese to the classical idiom, or from a wider perspective, from Mediaeval to Modern Portuguese: the formation of compound tenses, haver and ter in possessive constructions, impersonal haver and anaphoric hi. The object of study is 20 works in prose and verse written by Bernardim Ribeiro in the first half of the 16th century, and this paper is a continuation of other work by myself and earlier studies of the period, especially those of Rosa Virgínia de Mattos e Silva (PROHPOR group, Universidade Federal da Bahia). As well as providing greater understanding of the formation of classical Portuguese, I hope to contribute to solving some problems of authorship and publication posed by Bernardims work.
