Abstract

Abadal’s views on the origins of castles and high-medieval vicars are set out here, contrasted with archaeological and documentary data available today. From ancient times, the author gives a customary role to castles and believes that the nobility was a product of feudal times. Nowadays, the development of archaeology offers details that date back to the early Middle Ages and highlight the role of free-standing towers in the creation of defensive networks —also in the Visigoth and Andalusian eras. In the preserved written sources, the first vicars are nobles and magnates of all kinds, together with military leaders who take part in the settlement of the castles’ territories, which were innovated in the lands of Osona and which Abadal knew well enough.
