Abstract

The controversy lately arisen over the removal of the chapterhouse mural paintings from the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Sijena make it necessary to explain and assess the salvaging actions undertaken by Josep Gudiol i Ricart in order to protect cultural heritage. He carried out a large number of very different actions, going far beyond the ones generally known. An initial attempt to define and itemise the whole corpus of activities he was involved in forms the basis for a balanced and comprehensive appraisal of the man and his work to support artistic heritage.
