Abstract

This article provides an overview of the unsuccessful attempt at modernising Barcelona University during the brief period of university independence. This hampered reform of one of the most traditional institutions, namely university, was driven chiefly by a generation of prestigious university academics. Nevertheless, rather than highlighting the fleeting manifestations of Barcelona Universitys independence (perhaps mythologised by the memory of its main characters), it is interesting to look at the various fronts of resistance that opposed it, a combination of internal inertia, transforming discontinuities and strongly ideologised political confrontations.
