Abstract

Current landscapes are a result of human and natural interaction dating from centuries ago that provide them with an outstanding heritage value. Publicpolicies, specially those related to land and culture, must take this value into account and must learn how to manage it. The subfield that studies the relationship between landscape and history is historical geography. Europe has a long tradition of studies related to historical geography and historic landscape characterization. One good example is PaHisCat, a project developed by the Landscape Observatory in collaboration with the Department of History of Lleida University dealing with historical evolution of Catalan landscapes. The main objective of PaHisCat is creating a project that may be applied in public policies, especially those related to land management. The article also includes one further work by the Landscape Observatory: landscape catalogues, which are tools aimed at getting to know our landscape and its values so as to protecting, managing and planning it.
