Abstract

Our aim is to identify and analyse the relationship between the process of viticultural specialisation and demographic changes in a significant part of Catalonia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Firstly, we show how viticulture allowed for greater population densities than other forms of agriculture, such as grain crops. Secondly, this article highlights one of the consequences of the population increase related to viticulture specialisation: the emergence of new settlement units in areas where viticulture had expanded to. Finally, we propose the hypothesis that the crisis brought about by the phylloxera plague led to significant changes in the demographic patterns produced throughout the vine cultivation specialisation process, including, of course, the well-known depopulation caused by large scale migrations.
