Abstract

This work describes the evolution of the Christian, Moorish and Jewish communities in the Kingdom of Valencia within an approach to the difficulties in the coexistence among the three of them. Focusing on the first community, the Christians, the text highlights how the King wanted to consolidate a so-called border Christianity, with the control of different parishes and episcopates. When it comes to the second one, the Muslims or Mudejars, although they were superior in terms of language, religion and properties, they quickly lost their power. Finally, the third community, the Jews, were better treated. Their economic situation together with high qualified professions such as the alfaquí (doctor) and trujamà (interpreter) made it possible. That is why everyones dhimma was more a mirror than a reality.
