Abstract

The article presents the characteristics of Ravensbrück Concentration Camp for women and children, since it was created in 1938 till its liberation in April 1945. The camps history is defined by its function within the Nazi concentration camp system with its widespread web of commands and it particularly underlines the role of the female-guardians, the factories located inside the camp as well as the routines which determined the women-prisoners life and death; in regards to the interns, the not very well-known group catalogued as «asocial» is explained. Finally, some of the last months of the camps existence are detailed, including their overcrowding and the tragic death marches, together with todays role of the camp as a meeting and homage place for the survivors and a promoter of debates and historical research under its Memorial Center.
