Abstract

The article consists of two parts; the first part reviews the concept of villa from Ramon d’Abadal’s work to the present day, with a particular focus on the emergence of a new paradigm that separates the ownership of villa rents from land ownership as well as with special attention to its spreading in Catalonia. The second part discusses the components of the villa in the Carolingian period in Catalonia as a basic fiscal cell, ownership of the land, possession and conditions of use of the saltus and the different taxes that weighed on the inhabitants. The increase in the amount of cultivated land, the evolution of property, the role of the aprisio, the status of the peasants and the decline of the villa are also studied.
