Bishop Josep Pont i Gol and the Diocesan Church of Sogorb and Sogorb-Castelló (1951-1970) Authors Antoni Moliner Prada Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Keywords: Church, Sogorb, Castelló, National Catholicism, Vatican II, Josep Pont i Gol. Abstract This article presents the education of Bishop Dr. Josep Pont i Gol and his actions in the diocese of Sogorb and Sogorb-Castelló (1951-1970). His pastoral work was innovative compared with the dominant notion of National Catholicism, aiming to separate the Church from civil powers. His figure has not been studied in depth, despite his major contribution to the Second Vatican Council. Being a defender of ecumenism, religious freedom and the Church’s commitment to the world, as well as the role of secularism and the use of vernacular language in the liturgy, he belongs to the group of Spanish bishops who were most open and committed to the application of the Council’s doctrines against those in favour of conservative traditionalism. Keywords: Church, Sogorb, Castelló, National Catholicism, Vatican II, Josep Pont i Gol.
