Abstract

Using a number of class transcripts, this article sets out the need for transformation of the educational transfer process, taking into account the graduation of the various learning phases that enable mathematical abstraction and generalization. Special emphasis is placed upon the experiential and manipulative stages, and the key role that experientialism plays in this learning process, which is unfortunately not always recognized due to a lack of teacher training in this area. It also aims to raise awareness of the need to set sequences of problems, in order to stimulate the deductive and inductive reasoning processes that allow for the generalization of mathematical phenomena and laws. Thus, the essential goal of mathematical activity is not to solve problems but to learn.
