Abstract

The competence approach to teaching mathematics opens up a new space for the educational use of strategy games. They can contribute to the development of the four dimensions mentioned in documents from the Department of Education of the Generalitat de Catalunya: Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Connections and Communication, and Representation. Strategy games respond to the challenge of providing activities within any students reach. They also offer an opportunity to build a learning path tailored to their own interests and abilities. Furthermore, through three games (Hanoi Towers, Frogs and Toads, and Form and Value), the article examines the mathematics hidden under a deceptively simple and fun approach. We think it is interesting to give teachers and students the opportunity to go more deeply into the content and autonomously discover the pleasure of research.
