Abstract

Traditional guitars are built with parallel frets. From a geometric perspective, Thales’ theorem explains their intonation thanks to the parallel and transverse straight lines composed by the frets and strings. But since several years ago, guitarswithout parallel frets have become quite popular. Without parallelism of strings or frets, how is their correct intonation explained? The answer is a geometric theoremconcerning the conservation of proportionality despite the lack of any parallelism. All this has important implications formathematical research in a labour and artisanal field such as lutherie and for education, making the guitar a mathematical learning resource through which geometry speaks.
