Abstract

The aim of this work is to trace the origins of the teaching contents of the Catalan physicist Francesc Arago’s course in Social Arithmetic, which he taught during his time at the École Polytechnique in Paris between 1808 and 1830. This subject is compared here to preceding courses Political Arithmetic by Petty, Buffon’s Moral Arithmetic, and Social Mathematics by Condorcet. Furthermore, our study shows the relevance of Arago’s course as one of the vital precursors of the current Calculus of Probability.
