Abstract

The diversity of cultivated plants. A molecular vision. Our food is based on a limited number of plant species. These species were identified at the beginning of agriculture and have been the subject of an intense process of breeding. This process requires the widest possible base of genetic variability and therefore the conservation of biological diversity and its increase, if possible, is essential to maintain an adequate level of adaptation of these species to future conditions. The study of modern cultivated plants, the comparison with ancient plants and our understanding of the process of genetic improvement have been accelerated by molecular techniques. At the present time we have already a number of genomic sequences of plants that is growing continuously. The use of this information can be of great importance to meet the challenges of food production in the future.
