Abstract

Along the Catalan coast, from Cape Falcó to the River Sènia, and from the coastline to a depth of approximately 1,000 m in the open sea, 357 species of cnidarians have been recorded, including hydrozoans, anthozoans, scyphozoans and cubozoans. This great richness of species can be explained by both the environmental and geographical heterogeneity and the diversity of habitats of the Catalan sea. All groups of the phylum have been studied with a wide variety of methodologies such as plankton nets, dive sampling, collecting with bottom dredges, camera-equipped vehicles (ROVs), submarines and information from volunteers and citizen-science projects. The result is that it has been verified that 49.9% of the hydrozoans and 74% of the anthozoans of the species known in the Mediterranean are to be found in the Catalan sea.
