Abstract

Lepidoptera are a very diverse group and 3,404 species have been documented in Catalonia to date. Studies of this group go back to the end of the 19th century, with the publication of the first catalogue of 682 species by the entomologist Cuní i Martorell in 1874. Subsequently, the knowledge in this field has progressed to a great extent due to the entomological activity of the Natural Sciences Museum of Barcelona and, from 1976, of the Catalan Society of Lepidopterology. However, the scope of knowledge varies greatly depending on each specific group. Butterflies, with 203 species, are very well studied, not only in terms of their diversity but also of their ecology. Likewise, the catalogue of Macroheterocera, with 1,316 species, is quite exhaustive, while it is in the group of Microlepidoptera, with 2,088 species listed, that considerable work is still needed.
