Abstract

In this short panoramic paper, we deal with three aspects of the relations between thermodynamics and life: the second law of thermodynamics and the definition of life; entropy and the strategies of life; and temperature and the limits of life. Amongst the several particular topics examined here, there are non-equilibrium states, dissipative structures, conflicts between efficiency and power, planetary atmospheres, thermophilic organisms and cryopreservation.
