Abstract

In 1980, the Government of Canada established the Huntsman Award – best known as the “Nobel Prize in Oceanography” – in order to recognise outstanding contributions to marine sciences. The first laureate in biological oceanography was Ramon Margalef. During the award ceremony at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, a host of biographical, personal and scientific notes about Margalef were revealed. Ramon Margalef would go on to become arguably the most internationally acknowledged Catalan scientist.
