Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine for microbiology research. A perspective spanning more than a century Authors Mercè Berlanga Universitat de Barcelona David Miñana i Galbis Ricard Guerrero Barcelona Knowledge Hub de l’Academia Europaea Keywords: Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, microbiology, infectious illnesses. Abstract No other intellectual or scientific award carries the same prestige as the Nobel Prize. The list of laureates since the first Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (awarded in 1901) to the present day includes many microbiologists, exemplifying the significance of microbiology to biological research. An overview of those Nobel laureates provides a fascinating insight into the major progress made in microbiology over the last 115 years: from the discovery of the aetiology of many infectious diseases to the incorporation of fundamental ideas into biomedicine. Nevertheless, a number of substantial developments in microbiology failed to receive a prize from the Nobel committee despite their value. On the other hand, certain researchers who have not yet been awarded a Nobel Prize have indeed been actively involved in certain fields that have received the prize. Science relies on collective thinking and, ultimately, on human nature; therefore, when an individual is selected and awarded a prize, the choice is not always the right one or indeed fair. However, controversy and good decisions excepted, Nobel prizes are unquestionably vital when it comes to showcasing mankind’s foremost scientific developments. Keywords: Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, microbiology, infectious illnesses.
