Abstract The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Alexei I. Ekimov, Louis E. Brus and Moungi G. Bawendi for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots, which have been the starting point of a technological revolution. In this review, we look at the contributions of these three laureates and discuss how quantum dots have influenced the development of the third generation of solar cells.
