Abstract

Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) contain naturally occurring radionuclides (NOR), such as uranium and polonium. Certain industrial activities can generate NORM waste, and the leaching of the radionuclides which they contain may pose a risk of soil and water resource contamination. For this reason, it is essential to study how NORs interact with soils and to predict their mobility. This study identifies the main soil properties that may contribute to the sorption of uranium and polonium in soils and proposes univariate correlations of the solid-liquid distribution coefficient (Kd) on the basis of these properties. Statistical probability functions are also used to propose more likely Kd values in different scenarios.
