Abstract The combined use of molecular photoswitches and polymer matrices allows the preparation of photoactive materials for a wide variety of applications, which range from photoprotective coatings to anti-counterfeiting labels, photosensitive actuators and sensors. In this article we review some of the main systems of this type, with special emphasis on the principal challenges to be tackled for their design, and on our group’s foremost contributions to this field.
