Abstract To honour Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev’s genius and scientific vision, which are widely acknowledged by the scientific community, the UN has proclaimed 2019 to be the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. This fact, along with the recognized validity of the periodic table for the last 150 years, are described in this article, in which special reference is made to the women scientists who have discovered chemical elements or have contributed to the periodic table’s development. Details are given of the circumstances of their work and of the recognition which they received. Lastly, the difficulties bearing on the possible extension of the periodic table beyond the 118 elements known today are considered.Keywords: Periodic table of chemical elements, Mendeleev, IYPT 2019, women scientists. Pilar González Duarte és doctora en ciències químiques, màster de química per la Universitat de Michigan (Ann Arbor, EUA) i catedràtica jubilada de química inorgànica de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. La seva activitat docent i investigadora s’ha centrat en els camps de la química inorgànica i bioinorgànica. Ha estat presidenta de la Societat Catalana de Química de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans (1995-2002). El Govern de la Generalitat de Catalunya li va atorgar l’any 2004 la Distinció Jaume Vicens Vives a la qualitat docent universitària. Des de l’any 2004 és membre de l’IEC, adscrita a la Secció de Ciències i Tecnologia. Actualment, la seva activitat professional se centra particularment en la divulgació científica.
