Abstract

The use of molecular photoswitches enables remote modulation of chemical reactivity by irradiation with light. This does not only allow the external control of where, when and how fast a reaction takes place, but also the modification of the thermodynamic equilibrium that is reached. This article reviews the state of art in this field, with special focus on the strategies described to achieve reactivity control with molecular photoswitches and the applications which may be derived from them. We are currently exploring the preparation of photoactive materials for reversible CO2 capture and storage, as is discussed in the final section of this paper.
