Celebrating the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016: molecular machines Authors Pablo Ballester Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ). Abstract This article pays tribute to the researchers awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016. A series of selected examples drawn from the publications of Profs. Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir James Fraser Stoddart and Ben L. Feringa from before the year 2000 are described. The results demonstrate the valuable synthetic techniques and strategies developed by these researchers for the construction of interlocked or mechanically linked molecules and highly overcrowded alkenes, which constitute the basic structural elements for the development of molecular machines and motors. Keywords: Catenanes, mechanical bond, molecular machines, interlocked or threaded molecules, molecular topology, rotaxanes.
