Abstract

Several gases played a main role in two historical milestones. First, when the gases that form the atmosphere and especially oxygen were discovered and experiments with gases became very popular, as depicted by painter Joseph Wright of Derby in one of his works on scientific-technical subjects. Second, when the two opposed sides of the First World War decided to gas the enemy with chlorine, mustard gas or yperite. The dual character of gases is shared by one of the main characters of this story, the chemist Fritz Haber.
