Abstract

Abstention in trade union elections has tended to be seen by some work sociologists as a “less important” subject than election participation. This is probably because this abstention has not been a “problem”, since it has been relatively low compared with the abstention in political elections and it has not grown substantially since union elections began in the 1980s. The first analysis of data on abstention in union elections in Catalan companies in the periods 2003-2006 and 2007-2010 allows it to be verified that abstention rates have tended to rise slightly among the smaller and the largest companies (6-10/11-49 and 250 or more workers, respectively), while in the medium companies (50-249 employees) there has been a significant decline in abstention.
