Abstract

This paper combines two parallel approaches in order to contextualize and understand the school transitions – and to a lesser extent labor transitions – of young South American immigrants who reached Catalonia in the first decade of the 21st century. On the one hand, the statistically most important school itineraries, obtained through quantitative analysis, are presented. Likewise, seven school trajectories of young South Americans recently settled in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat are presented; these trajectories illustrate the itineraries by means of explanatory mechanisms. Some of these mechanisms involve migratory processes (reception arrangements, school differences in origin and destination, teachers’ expectations and labelling effect), discrimination and inter-ethnic conflict, family characteristics and peer group pressure, among others. The seven trajectories are the result of fieldwork which was based on the monitoring of an entire cohort of the 4th year of ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education level) of a small high school of La Florida neighborhood in the city of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat during 4 years (2007-2011).
