Abstract

The social and environmental unsustainability of the current agrofood system is already known. Consequently, a great number of alternative experiences of agroecological consumption are arising. Given the increasing proliferation of such organizations in Barcelona, this article focuses on the comparative analysis of our selected cases in the city. It presents their main characteristics but especially emphasizes the analysis of new patterns of social interaction that come up in accordance with their organizational structures. There are arguments for seeing in what sense the relational processes established among the actors assume some level of social and democratic transformation by the economic sector in which they are located. This article also provides arguments for looking at these organizations as potential socialization spaces which facilitate the cultivation of a kind of citizenship concerned about environmental or ecological issues as a result of participation, social capital accumulation, trust or empowerment.

Keywords: citizenship, empowerment, trust, social capital, collective consumption.
