Abstract

By analysing data from the Carles Pi i Sunyer Foundation, this article focuses on the mechanisms used by Catalan city councils to address the management of religious pluralism. Over the last decade, the existence and visibility of religious diversity in Catalonia has grown, largely due to high rates of immigration. Considering to the competences that legislation assigns local government, the article analyses political, regulatory and administrative areas so as to perform a structural explanation of the different ways of addressing the management of municipal affairs in this sphere. The research was carried out using a multi-strategic design that permitted the identification of three management models depending on the mechanisms used. We label these three mechanisms non-management, political regulation management and administrative management. In addition to various management strategies, the examples share a background of previous problems, the diversification of the population in terms of origin and the differentiation of management capabilities. Another issue we will focus on is the non-impact of the Mayor’s political persuasion on the development of one or other management model.
