Abstract

The aim of this article is to explain the methodological issues considered in the ongoing research that the authors are involved in on the adoption of mobile telephony among the elderly. The “Mobile Communication and Old Age” research project forms part of the Mobile Communication, Economy and Society Research Program at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute of the Open University of Catalonia. A qualitative approach, involving semistructured interviews, is being employed for the research. The population studied comprises people over the age of 60 residing in the Barcelona metropolitan area. This article sets out the methodological strategies for the empirical fieldwork, including selection of and access to the interviewees, and for the analysis using the ATLAS.ti software. It also presents the conceptualization of socioeconomic status.
