Abstract

The article presents the findings from a research about the image of retirement shared by the working adult population. A series of cultural, economic and social circumstances impinge on both transition from working life to the new stage and the experience of this passage in different ways. The article draws on Atchleys theory of continuity and Ursula Lehrs concept of anticipation so as to account for individual differences with regard to the individuals preparation and familiarisation with retirement. The capacity to foresee events shows to be crucial for an effective answer and a positive attitude. A sample of working men and women from 45 to 64 years old has been interviewed in order spell out their meanings, ideas and concepts of retirement as well as their anticipation of this stage. Specific aims are: a) to identify typologies of attitudes and expectations; b) to find out how the social, cultural, economic and political possibilities of retired people are perceived; and c) to analyse age, class and gender differences with regard to expectations.
