Abstract

The present study of first unions disruption (marital or not) in Catalonia was carried out with the biographical information (individual and unions characteristics) of the feminine population contained in the Spanish Socio-Demographic Survey of 1991. Union disruption is the dependant variable, and it is related to some social, demographic and family factors. The perception of change along the observed period is taken into account by the grouping of unions, constituted between 1941 and 1990, into union cohorts, and a first insight into the most recent trends is done through a transversal analysis for the period 1986-1990. The last part of the paper offers a multivariate analysis of first union disruption probability in which Catalonia is compared with the rest of Spain.
