Abstract

This article presents a theoretical-empirical reflection on the dialectic between modernity and tradition with relation ti the new cultural habits developed by the consumer society. Generalised access to consumer goods never occurs on an equitable basis: to the contrary, different cultural and economic possibilities lead to important differences in acces, both in quantitative and qualitative terms. Such differences permit the consolidation of different and distinctive life styles, which in turn constitute the basis for further social inequality.
