Abstract

The overall topic of the relationship between power(s) and language(s) in Catalonia is discussed in depht. The current social distribution of the population in this autonomous community ans nationality within Spain, makes it difficult to attribute a specific social indexical value to each of the two main languages in contact, that is, Spanish and Catalan. At least in the Barcelona area, the core of the Catalan speaking territories, Catalan is the language most spread among middle class sectors whereas Sànish is the most spread variety amoung popular classes and upper elites. This complicated sociolinguistic scenario makes it hard to speculate on the feasability of survival of Catalan in the near future. The most important centers of power remain out of control of the Catalan society.
