Abstract

A quantitative detailing of a composer’s musical output provides a panoramic view of his work, furthering an understanding of the place and time in which he lived while also providing insight into the past and subsequent reception of his musical corpus. Numerical analysis is also valuable for making connections and comparisons with other musical composers of his time. This article details the surviving musical works of Antoni Milà, who was chapel master of Tarragona Cathedral from 1762 to 1789. Before that, however, he had been chapel master at the church of Santa Maria in Vilafranca del Penedès, and it is in important archives in these two localities where most of his production is to be found. The statistics presented in this study show that this chapel master was a very prolific composer who cultivated a variety of musical types responding to the requirements of the churches in which he worked. The focus of this article must necessarily be a starting point and a concrete basis for future qualitative analytical studies of his work.
