The farsed epistles of Saint Stephen in Occitan: a musical approach

Abstract

The farsed epistles of Saint Stephen in Occitan were one of the first musical expressions in vernacular language in liturgical music. Their origins are contemporaneous with those of northern medieval France and they gave rise to the tradition in Catalan. As opposed to the case of other languages, including Picard and Latin, the farsed epistles of Saint Stephen in Occitan endured for centuries, far beyond the medieval period, and evidence of their practice and singing is found up to the 19th century in Aix-en-Provence.

This article considers the eleven sources in Occitan language, two of which were rediscovered in the course of this research. These two new sources are an Agen manuscript and a transcription of a now lost Riols source published in a local press article, which had been forgotten since the 19th century and had remained unknown to the various authors who have studied these sources’ text and music in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Additionally, the relationship between the two texts of the respective archetypes is established since there are sources that contain the texts of both.
