Improved sustainability for farmsteads: using renewable energies Authors Jordi Vilalta Mora Consorci per al Desenvolupament de la Catalunya Central Keywords: farms, sustainability, renewable energies, self-sufficiency. Abstract At present there is a very high dependence on fossil fuels, so everything from farmsteads’ basic energy needs to their production systems are tied to the constant increase in prices and to the risk of future supply shortages. The farmstead, with its efficient and effective use of the resources in its surroundings, was once a symbol of self-sufficiency in rural areas and a return to such high levels of resource efficiency and effectiveness linked to natural elements like sunlight, wind, water and biomass should be fostered. The new technologies, in particular, would allow this to be achieved in an efficient and intelligent way. Keywords: farms, sustainability, renewable energies, self-sufficiency.
