Abstract

Many are the causes for the cultural distance between the rural and urban worlds. Whilst some of those causes go back a long way, others stem from a competition for land use at a time at which the rural and the urban realities are in fact overlapping. That distance, which often generates misunderstandings and contempt, has been accompanied by a distorted vision of the truth and image of agriculture. In addition to being unfair, this misperception of the farming activity represents an additional burden for the successful development of a sector that is essential to guaranteeing our future. In light of these circumstances, this article aims to underscore the importance of objective statistics in refuting the legends and myths about the farming world, which have come to be widely accepted as facts.
