Abstract

This paper discusses some of the results of the author’s doctoral thesis, which explores the reality of the generational handover of the agricultural sector as a means to better understand the installation process and the agricultural practices of young people and their attitudes vis-à-vis a change of paradigm. The results reveal great diversity in the agricultural practices and attitudes of the younger generations in keeping with their family backgrounds. Those who were born in an agrarian environment (traditional farmers) are more likely to follow the conventional agricultural paradigms, whereas those who come from non-agrarian families (newcomer farmers) display different traits that are more closely associated with a new paradigm. The sample consulted confirms the existence of an emerging group that is very connected to the land and to local organic production, a group with a spirit of independence that remains optimistic about the future of the agricultural sector. This new wave of young farmers with renewed energy has been referred to as the “New Peasantry”.
