Abstract The use of organic matter, particularly compost, delivers many advantages as a soil improver, but the characteristics of the different materials, as well as soil and vegetable needs, must also be known and monitored. It is not always clear whether certain types of organic materials are used to find a quick solution or whether there is a plan in place with well-defined objectives and dosages. Moreover, it is difficult to find clear and organised information about the recycling of organic matter through soil and plants. This article addresses all these aspects and highlights the range of materials that can be considered as compost, as well as the characteristics and performance of each one. Keywords: soil, organic matter, organics waste, compost, fertilization, mineralization.
